Hunter-Gatherers:

1. What are hunter-gatherers – that is, how do they make a living and how do they organize themselves socially?

2. What part of the group does the hunting? What about the gathering? What proportion (roughly) does each of these provide to the diet?

3. What kinds of social divisions are found in hunter-gatherer groups? Why?

4. What kinds of relationships do hunter-gatherers form with one another? Why?

5. What are a couple of characteristics of hunter-gatherer populations?

Myth of Hunter-Gatherers:

1. What are the two “traditional ideas” about hunter-gatherers that Ames explains? How did these ideas change in the 1960’s?

2. Use two of the societies Ames discusses in the article and explain how the evidence we now have about them debunks these old ideas.  Be specific and detailed in your answers.

What factors are hypothesized to have allowed the development of social complexity in these (and other) hunter-gatherer groups?
