complete “Activity: Annotating a Passage”
1.. annotate paragraphs 1 through 5 of the David Brooks essay. (I have attached the essay)
2.In addition to annotating the passage, write a paragraph in which you summarize the literal meaning of the text. Before writing the summary, Length of summary: 100 words
Note: a summary does not contain your opinion of the essay you are summarizing.
3.Then write an analysis of the text. But analyze the text for how the writer presents his case, not for what he says.
4.Before writing your first draft, analyze the text using the questions in the “Writing Strategies Checklist” on p. 29. BUT – your essay should NOT consist of answers to those questions in the order of the questions. Instead, you would organize it based on what elements actually are prominent in this text.
Length of analysis: 250 words. ( I have attached the questions with the David Brooks essay)
5.Finally, write a description of the kinds of annotations you made, how many times you read the passage to make annotations, and if you found it helpful to make annotations in preparation to summarizing and analyzing the text.
To summarize, you will submit the following:
I. A summary of the Brooks excerpt.
II. An analysis of the Brooks writing.
III. A description of the annotations you made.
Put all 3 assignments into one Word document. Save as "Ch. 2" No need to use special APA formatting for this activity (but do double space your text and complete spell check and watch for errors)
