Introductory Discrete Mathematics

Consider a job that you would like to hold in the future. Once you have chosen a job, you will consider the skills needed to qualify for this position. The following questions will help you plan and prioritize the knowledge and skills needed for the position you have chosen as a goal for your career.
? What are the minimal math skills that you need to do the job?
? Which math skills would allow you to be most effective?
? What math-related skills would be most beneficial to the company long term?
? Prioritizing your skills by importance, what are the key competences that you bring to the company?
Prepare a 5-page portfolio using examples from discrete mathematics that you could use to convince an employer that you can perform the duties of that job. Your portfolio will include three samples of your best work that you consider a priority for doing your job effectively, at least five external citations, and examples of your written communication skills.
Cover Page
Your name, course, date, and target job (you could even include a small picture or clip art depicting the job).
Page 1
Write a description of your target job and why you think you are well suited for this position. This will require you to research the occupation and the abilities needed for the position. As you write your description, you are to organize and prioritize the skills that will make you the best candidate for the job. You will include one of the following options at the end of the first page based on your skill level as it relates to the job description.
Option 1

You will need to compose a 2–3 sentence job description as well as information regarding specific requirements and approximate starting salary, job market information, and required education. According to importance, describe at least one skill that is required by the job which you have learned in discrete mathematics, such as “perform a trace on an algorithm” or “interpret a state transition diagram.” A good resource that matches skills sets with jobs is http://www.onetonline.org/.

Option 2

If it is early in your career and you have not developed a specific skill set, you are to identify and prioritize the steps needed to build a particular skill. You will need to compose a 2–3 sentence job description, as well as information regarding specific requirements, approximate starting salary, job market information, and required education. According to importance, describe at least one skill that is required by the job which you have learned in discrete mathematics, such as “perform a trace on an algorithm” or “interpret a state transition diagram.” A good resource that matches skills sets with jobs is http://www.onetonline.org/.
Note: Do not simply copy and paste the information from the Internet. You may use the language and phrasing from your cited sources, but the information must be stated in your own words in a form that is easy to read. Select the skills that you feel are most appropriate to your talents and the content of this course.
Page 2, 3, 4
In order for you to demonstrate your math abilities for this position, you need to review the math problems studied through the course. You will prioritize the top three sample problems that you have completed using three different topics covered in this course which will be helpful in carrying out the duties of your target job. You may not use any of the problems from the course material, including those from the Course Notes, Discussion Boards, Quizzes, or Instructor-Graded Assignments. You should compose a problem and show how you would solve it. All aspects of the Plagiarism Policy, as stated in the course Syllabus, will be applied to this assignment. Be creative! For example, show how you might draw a spanning tree to find the minimum cost for a network diagram or you might compose a Fibonacci sequence to figure out how many residents will be living in a certain area in 20 years.
For each problem, include the following:
- Description of the problem or scenario
- Your solution to the problem
- External resources (with APA citations) that you used to research the problem or solution
Page 5
A 1-page summary on how discrete mathematics fits into the real world and a self-reflection on how your thinking about mathematics has changed (or perhaps it has not) over the course of this term and how mathematic skills help to achieve your long-term employment goals.
Citations
You must include at least five citations in APA format for the information presented in this Assignment.
