Statistics

Amy is a waitress. She noticed that several of her colleagues drew little smiley faces, wrote “thanks,” and signed their name on the check. Amy always thought this was pretty dumb, but Beth, a fellow waitress, swears she gets better tips that way.

Since Amy took Soc 203 last year, she thought she might test whether or not drawing a happy face and writing thanks on her customer’s checks would increase her tips. She randomly selected 11 checks on which she drew the smiley face, and on her other 11 checks she did not.

Below are the tip percentages Amy received on the bills.

By hand or using excel: Create a frequency and percentage distribution table for each set of checks. Break the percentages into the following categories: 0-9%;10-19%; 20-29%; 30-39%; 40% or higher. Also include a column for cumulative frequency and cumulative percentage. Create one table for smiley bills and one for normal bills):
